We had our first mystery reader this week. The students were so excited as our first mystery reader came down the hallway after Mrs. Neiderer announced we had a visitor! She read the Berenstain Bears and Too Much Junk Food by Stan and Jan Berenstain. It was an enjoyable book with a great lesson, especially for this time of year, when there is so much candy everywhere! Our reader then shared a healthy snack with the students. I'm so excited that our mystery reader program has begun!
What a cool day we had in first grade! First, on Friday, one of our students brought in some caterpillars already tucked away in their chrysalis. This morning when we got to school, five of the six monarch butterflies had hatched! At morning recess, we released the butterflies just in time for their migration to Mexico. Then in the afternoon we had a fire assembly given by Captain Chuck and the Hanover and Penn Township Fire Departments. The students love this very informative and very entertaining assembly every year. The students then got to get a close up look at the fire trucks outside. And as a bonus, one of the fireman asked if I wanted to go up the 100 foot bucket and I did! Mr. Golden and the other elementary school teachers took a ride up the bucket as well. What an exciting day for us all!
We've been having a lot of fun in first grade and there is a lot more fun to come! The students have two days off in the month of October, October 10th for Columbus Day and October 21st for parent conferences. Grandparents Day is October 20th. Students should wear their school uniform for Grandparents Day. We will have gym on October 17th instead, so please have the students wear their gym uniform on Monday, October 17th and their school uniform on October 20th. Our Halloween party will be October 28th. If you are interested in donating drinks, plates, a salty snack, or a sweet snack, please let me know.
This past week, we have started learning subtraction. Do not get alarmed if this is hard at first for your first grader. Subtraction is a very abstract and hard concept to learn! Any fact practice with math flash cards or math fact games on a tablet will help your child conquer math a little earlier!
We have been learning blends and short and long sounds in phonics, but in the month of October, we will start learning digraphs and sneaky e. I have given two spelling tests so far and the students have done an amazing job with these. I have opted not to send a spelling list home but I do work with the students on these words through the week. This process allows me to see if the students are learning how to spell the words using spelling tactics without memorizing the words. If this process does not continue to be successful, I will revamp it, but as long as it is working as well as it is, I will keep it in place.
We have started using graphic organizers to help us write stories. This past week, we wrote stories about aliens. They are currently hanging in the hallway, but they will come in soon. We have also been using comprehension tools to help us understand what we are reading. We have a comprehension ball, comprehension dice, and comprehension spinners. The students love these methods and I am seeing great results with listening and reading skills!
I stayed late on Friday and decorated the room for fall. We are currently learning about the seasons, so this is great timing to focus on a new season! I also hung up the behavior chart, so the students should start having a color on their assignment book everyday. We are in full swing now, with students of the week starting last week and mystery readers on the schedule! Below is a picture from Friday when we made scarecrows with our prayer partners. You should have seen the mess in the room after that! There was straw everywhere - what fun!
