This week was pumpkin week in first grade. Every day we did at least one pumpkin science lesson, including the life cycle of a pumpkin, composting pumpkins, and taking apart pumpkins. Part of observing pumpkins, we had to taste them, so we had pumpkin treats every day to enjoy, including pumpkin pie, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin donuts, and pumpkin dip. Thank you so much parents! We had tons of fun and learned a lot through lessons, experiments, hands-on activities, and eating yummy snacks! Next Thursday is our Halloween party. Your student is welcome to bring something to hand out at the party (must be individually wrapped to take home if food). It is a dress down day!
First grade had our first mystery reader of the school year. The students get so excited when they receive the call that there is a surprise guest to see them! Our first readers read "There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat" by Lucille Colandro. They even brought props for the kids to interact with the story. After the book and a quick group pose, our readers handed out snacks, pencils, and rings, all with bats on them. What a great way to start our mystery reader program!
We have been learning a lot in first grade! In science, we did some experiments with apples. We compared different color apples and different flavor apples. We talked about the differences between tart and sweet. Through experiments, we learned that apples float and that they brown after being sliced. In math, we are working on subtraction and adding coins. In phonics, we have started learning digraphs, including ck, th, and ng and suffixes, including "s" and "ing". We are studying realistic fiction and fantasy through reading and writing. We also have been learning a lot about Christopher Columbus. And, of course, we learn about God's love everyday! Below are some pictures of our apple experiments, the students on the playground, and some iPad fun.
