The first graders are learning a lot! We have finished our chapter on addition and have moved on to subtraction. While we are working on many ways to add and subtract in school using manipulatives, number lines, work mats, and mental math, it is always a good idea for first graders to be working on memorizing addition facts at home, with answers up to ten. By the end of the year, math facts with answers up to 20 would be beneficial for the kids to practice and memorize.
We are currently learning blends, digraphs, and suffixes in phonics. We are reading on a daily basis and have reached over 5,000 on our reading log minutes already! This week, we have been very busy! The students worked in groups using geographic shapes to make Christopher Columbus' three ships. We had a fire prevention assembly and a spiritual adoption presentation. Last week, we visited the Church and learned about many holy things and how to be reverent.
We have some important dates coming up:
October 13th: Parent/teacher conferences; no school for elementary students
October 20th: Fall Festival
October 26th: Grandparents' Day; Picture Retake Day
