We had two mystery readers last week. They read the book Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin. This is a very funny book about how much dragons love tacos, but not salsa! When they accidentally eat spicy salsa, everyone's in red-hot trouble! The students enjoyed a snack after the story.
In addition to mystery reader fun in first grade, we are now focusing on reading fluency. We have reading strategies in place, but we are practicing those strategies to become more fluent readers. We have finished our chapters on double digit addition and subtraction and have moved on to measuring and time in math. We have learned our four first grade diphthongs and we are still learning new digraphs in phonics. In writing, we have been working on letter writing, personal narratives, and writing with more detail. In religion, we are learning about Lent and preparing for Easter. And while it is all focused on learning, we have been having lots of fun with Dr. Seuss' birthday, an extra special show and tell, and writing games, where the students work in teams writing sentences that describe something while the rest of the class has to guess what that is after hearing the clues. I can't believe we're in the third trimester already!
