Dear “soon to be” second graders and families,
I’m sure that it feels like only yesterday you were preparing your kindergartner for first grade. Now you are preparing them for a very big school year, second grade! My goal in second grade is to help your child grow academically, socially, and independently. Second grade is a very exciting year as we prepare for, and receive two very important sacraments; First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Near the beginning of the school year, your child will get a paper stating all the important dates for these two sacraments. Almost all of our religion curriculum is based around these two sacraments and the Mass. I highly encourage you to attend Mass with your child. The children need to see and hear all that occurs during this special, sacred time. Religion class makes much more sense to the children when they can envision what we are learning about. For now, enjoy summer vacation, but make sure that your child is finding time to read each day. This should be a quiet, relaxing and fun time. Reading to your child is also important, as you are modeling good reading by doing this. Reading over the summer is crucial to having your child keep those skills sharp and ready for 2nd grade. It is also a good idea to keep a set of basic math addition and subtraction flash cards handy. We jump right into addition and subtraction and being able to recall those facts quickly will be very helpful. We have a lot of fun in second grade, but we also begin doing some much more challenging work. I look forward to beginning our year together and helping your child to grow as a second grader. We go through many pencils, glue sticks, and crayons throughout the school year. I am asking that you place the crayons, pencils, dry erase markers, and glue sticks in a large Ziplock style back with your child’s name labeled on it. Here is the supply list:
Art Supply List Art supplies should be kept in an “art bag” for art class. Set of colored pencils 2 Black fine point sharpies Colored markers Journal Clorox wipes Large shirt for a smock. (Please no tie on aprons.) If you need to contact me, my school email is moliver@sjshanoverpa.org. I will try to check my email about once a week over the summer. I am excited to begin another school year, and cannot wait to see your child’s smiling face on the first day. For now, enjoy summer vacation, take time to decompress from a very busy school year. Hopefully, you and your child find time to read throughout the summer. Respectfully, Mrs. Maggie Oliver |
