A huge part of my job as your child’s 5th grade teacher is to prepare the kids for the more fast-paced and independent role that they will play in the middle school setting. As the school year progresses, I raise my expectations and expect more from each student. Everyone will be at their own level, but will still be pushed to be and do their best. I also like to emphasize to the students in the beginning of the school year how they are now the role models of the elementary school and that their behavior should be of the highest standard. Classroom and individual consequences as well as privileges will be clear from the first week.
The grade level meeting for the 5th grade will be Monday, August 18th at 6:00pm. Please mark your calendars now. It would be wonderful to have 100% attendance. I will have valuable information on how I manage the 5th grade as well as examples of assignments, copybooks, projects, etc.

Forgive me for not getting out the newsletter last week. We were busy all afternoon with end-of-year fun and I had somewhere to be after school. Thank you so very much for the thoughtful gifts! I'm going to save the giftcard for our vacation at the end of June. We are driving to TN for my husband's grandparent's 60th wedding anniversary celebration. We plan to have a night for a dinner cruise, a day at the Knoxville Zoo, and perhaps Dollywood. Avalyn loves her bubbles & glow wand goodies and our new puppy, Bella, loves her tug-of-war toy!
Last Friday - as well as through this week - I've been doing a lot of cleaning/purging from our closets and coatroom. In doing so, I've given the kids workbooks from all subjects. I tried to give some books to students who could benefit from extra review/practice. I said the MS teachers would be impressed to see those completed and shown to them the first week of school. Some have answers available for checking, others you could probably help with checking.
Just a few reminders for this week:
Wednesday - AM drop-off and PM pick-up are at the Middle School ONLY. 5th grades do NOT come to the Elementary School at all. Students should have a folder with a few sheets of paper, pencil case, water bottle with their name on it, a PACKED lunch, and sneakers. I received a few lunch orders this week that paid for lunch or milk on Wednesday. All students will need to pack - and that includes a drink as milk will not be available at Kid's Kingdom. I tried to modify the lunch envelopes I got this morning, but had to send a few back today if you paid by check because there will be no "next week" for lunch credits.
Friday - AM drop-off and PM pick-up are at the Middle School ONLY. Students should wear nice clothes for the closing liturgy. Students will be dismissed from our assigned classroom after mass after I distribute report cards.
I would like to ask if each parent could reply in email or a note to school by June 5th about comments, thoughts, or suggestions about your child's 5th grade year. Each year that I've been here at St. Joe's I've tried to modify, adjust, or just plain change things that have gone well or not as smoothly as I anticipated. For example, you could tell me about your child's favorite subject and why, a topic we studied that was interesting or one that could be 'jazzed' up, or perhaps a favorite book report project. Thank you for your feedback.
Have a wonderful summer vacation! Keep practicing your skills over the summer to stay sharp for middle school.
