Despite the craziness that overtakes Hanover when Halloween comes around, we've been ultra-productive in class this week! We undertook a big pumpkin globe project over multiple days. We learned about longitude, latitude, the equator, prime meridian, tropics, 7 continents and 3 oceans. As much as I'd love to keep these on display, our warm building will not permit it and these are coming home today. Remember to keep our pumpkin globes cool. I won't mention names, but I once heard a story of a student to took it upon themselves to keep it as a 5th grade memory and put it in the back of their closet... It was discovered a few months later - in not so good shape. Outside is best. :)
We also had a lot of fun with our Halloween Spelling List. We made ghosts for our prayer partners as well as a craft together and yummy snacks to munch on today. We learned of Saint Damien who sacrificed his own health, and eventually his life, to love and care for the lepers of Molokai. We enjoyed singing about photosynthesis. We began discussing our first formal writing for English class. Students are choosing topics for a research writing next week. We've dove into Egypt and have been practicing hieroglyphics and learning about mumification! Our math fluency is getting practice with single and double digit factors. We updated our HW assignment books so everyone should be dated up through the end of November. This means due dates for CE assignments, prayer tests, and Book It due dates should be filled in. Oh and the book fair too! Whew, I'm exhausted!
Next week, we'll be prepping and delivering boxes for our Thanksgiving food collection. (Papers came home about this on Wednesday.) Remember our class is collecting green beans. Last year, the 5th grade brought in over 60 cans! Just saying... Oh, and if you have any more boxes, we could use a few more.
The Elementary School will have Liturgy on Tuesday, November 1st for All Saints Day. Join us if you are available. 3rd grade is planning the liturgy, but some 5th graders are helping out too.
Tuesday: Math Ch 2 Test
SS Ch 4 Less 1-2 Quiz
Wednesday: CE Due
Friday: Spelling Lesson 9
Have a wonderful weekend! I hear it'll be a nice, sunny one!
