Tuesday of this week was our milestone 100th day of school! It is not so hyped up as it is within the lower grades, but I challenged the kids to think of as many things as possible they've learned so far in 5th grade. My objective was to have them fill a journal page, but apparently this was a harder assignment than I anticipated as many had trouble naming 10! I hope those minds haven't slowed too much because of the frigid temperatures!
We've spent a good deal of time this week in Religion class discussing using our God-given guides to make good choices. There are so many things God has given us and people that God puts in our lives to help us make good decisions on a daily basis. As part of last night's HW assignment, a discussion over what they've retained regarding this conversation in the classroom should have taken place at home. I hope your student was able to share good details with you.
After wrapping up our Adjectives Unit this week, we started a letter writing project. I gave the choice of writing a letter to Gov. Wolfe or President Obama. It seems the President is more exciting as no one chose the Governor. We discussed ideas, brainstormed, drafted, edited, and shared in class. Now we are on our way to good copies. Several students were interested in typing their letters. If your student is one of them, this is due on Monday. If chosen to hand-write, we started in class this afternoon and will finish in school Monday AM. Finally, we will work together to address envelopes and get our mail sent off - just in time for Presidents Day! I did this with a class a few years ago and we received a nice response. This year, I'd like the students to send their letters individually so they can hopefully receive their own personal mail in return. Everyone is using SJS for a return address. I have all the envelopes ready to go, if you could send in 1 stamp or $0.50 and I will stop at the Post Office to pick up what we need, that will be helpful.
Monday: Send in $0.50 or a stamp
If student chose to type President Letter, it is due Monday.
Wednesday: Religion Ch 13 Test
Friday: Spelling Less 19 Test
Thanks to our snow day make-up, we will have school Friday, 2/3. This will also be our day for St. Valentine's Day celebration. Students may bring in cards for their classmates if they wish. (17 students) If you would like to send in a treat/drink/paper products, please give me a heads up by Wednesday so I know what to supplement.
And speaking of heads-up, I'm working on our field trip and while it is not finalized, I'm looking at late March or the 2nd/3rd week of April on a Wednesday or Thursday. If you are interested in being a chaperone, I'll be sending out more info once I make confirmations on arrangements. There shouldn't be a limit on chaperones at the locations I'm looking into. Estimated cost should be ~$20/students and adults.
Have a wonderful weekend! Try to stay warm!
