We had some fun, interactive learning this week with a hands-on science project. While studying cells and organelles, the students had to plan for and organize how to create a model of a plant cell using food items. The next day, they had to use food items I provided (but they suggested) to create this model. We used various items such as jello, oranges, split peas, blackberries, and Reeses peanut butter cups! Check out the pictures on the website!
Our first HW and Current Event assignments began this week. Students should remember that not only are due dates for all CE and prayer tests in their copybooks, but also we've dated and filled in these dates in our HW books for all of September. Punctuality is a critical skill in Middle School life, so I take it seriously for the 5th graders.
Today, we spent some time discussing the events of 9/11 and the importance of remembering those who lost their lives on that day. I read a book about Father Mychal Judge and his sacrifice to help others on 9/11. I encouraged the kids to visit the flag display at West Manheim Elementary to take in the incredible visual display available so close to us! I also encouraged them to talk to you about what you remember, where you were, how you felt, etc. We will have a short follow-up about this on Monday.
Our first test packets are coming home today. Please sign and return these to school no later than Tuesday. Math & Science quizzes from yesterday will be in next week's packet. Also, I began to imput some grades into the portal. Info sheets are coming home with your students today to help you access the grades/averages.
Finally, if you know a 5th grade parent who is not on my email mailing list, please FWD this message to them and ask them to email me. Thanks!
