Fantastic week! This week we reading about "Klondike Kate," learning about adverbs and prepositions with CandyLand, finishing our last spelling list, practicing with polygons and perimeter, studying/researching the Sacrament of Holy Orders, experimenting with Newton's Laws, and diving into Civil War history. We ended the day today with some fun "circle writing." While discovering information about other Bishops in PA, one group discovered that their Bishop was celebrating his 30th anniversary of ordination this week on Tuesday 5/14. I helped them prepare some congratulatory cards and mailed them off. Also, Kylie and her mom put together a great presentation of Civil War information and artifacts as collected by her "Pappy." If you have not already, be sure to see the "Civil War" post on the 5th grade section of the school website for more info.
I have 2 fliers that I wanted to see if anyone was interested in, so I can make copies if necessary. (1) A form for those interested in joining the band. The program is directed by Lynn Yealy. There is an informational meeting next week with more details if you have a child interested. (2) A registration form for a summer tennis program at Southwestern HS called Tennis for Kids. This program is one that I have been Site Director for. I worked there for 4 years, but then last summer, was busy having a baby so I passed the job on. It is a great program that allows kids to borrow equipment if needed, learn about the sport, play games, and have fun. Best of all - it is FREE! You could also complete an online registration form at the website - www.tennisforkidsyork.com. I can answer most questions about the program if you need.
We are coming very close to the the final newsletter for this school year. I would like to ask if each parent could reply in email or a note to school by June 6th about comments, thoughts, or suggestions about your child's 5th grade year. Each year that I've been here at St. Joe's I've tried to modify, adjust, or just plain change things that have gone well or not as smoothly as I anticipated. For example, you could tell me about your child's favorite subject and why, a topic we studied that was interesting or one that could be 'jazzed' up, or perhaps a favorite book report project.
Parent Volunteer Opportunities:

On Monday, June 3, I am looking for some volunteers that can come help us clean up our classroom for the summer. This includes cleaning chairs and desks, and packing and putting away textbooks. If you are available that day in the morning, please let me know. Thanks for your help!
Also, on Wednesday, June 5, Mrs. Bortner is in need of helpers to assist with Field
