What we did this week:
Reading: Story - Finished "Chang and the Bamboo Flute"
Began "Nellie Bly: Star Reporter"
Spelling: Lesson 5
English: Revising sentences with conjunctions, using appositives, short story with vocab
Religion: The Sacrament of Baptism
Science: Life Science - Cell Organization, body systems
SS: Weathering/erosion changes the landscape of the Earth
Much better quality current events this week. The students really enjoyed our discussion about their articles this week. I'm glad they are starting to pay attention to these events around us and in our world. A few stories I heard from the students in passing this week started with, "Mrs. Maurer, guess what I heard about on the news?" And boy, they were excited to share. Today's test packet contains each student's CE grade for the first 2 assignments. This can be raised/lowered/stay the same with the quality of the remaining 3 CEs this trimester.
Yesterday I sent a packet home about this year's Book It program. This outlines our goals and requirements throughout the program (October-March). 20-25 minutes/day is everyone's goal and this could be through in-school free reading time or at home. Participation is mandatory and book reports count as a reading grade.
Progress reports will be coming home next Thursday(10/3). Remember the progress report can be kept - only sign and return the envelope to school. If you would like to, you can bring the envelope back to be returned at your conference time on Friday (10/4). Because progress reports and conferences are back to back this year, I will only have the students' grades on the report. We will discuss strengths/weaknesses at the conference and therefore I will not have comments written under the grades.
Don't forget you can register your Giant BonusCard to help our school earn free money! Fliers went home on Wednesday about this. Here is the link: http://www.giantfoodstores.com/aplus/
If something comes up and you cannot make your conference, please let me know ASAP.
