First grade celebrated Pumpkin Day as part of our Fall lessons. We learned a lot about pumpkins and recorded our observations when doing experiments with our pumpkins. We learned the life cycle of the pumpkin from seed to decay and we learned all of the different parts of the pumpkin. We got our hands dirty, but it was fun! In the end, we carved jack-o-lanterns and had fun mimicking them and everyone got to take home a pumpkin.
We had a mystery reader share with us a very special book this week. One of our student's aunts, Cameron Marasco, authored a new book titled Freedom Friends. The book is about a group of curious school kids that learn about the founding documents of America, the freedoms they protect, and their individual rights to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. It's a great book that just came out and the students enjoyed it a lot!
There are also some pictures of the student's group project posters where they made Columbus's three ships using 2-D shapes. There are a few pictures of the students learning about fall, the importance of trees, and why the leaves change colors and fall off the tree.
We had our first mystery reader this week! She read a great Halloween story, At the Old Haunted House by Helen Ketteman. The rhyming book tells a story about three children taking a tour of a haunted house with a new creature in each room. It was written and illustrated by a Pixar character designer, so the pictures are top-notch! The students found the story very funny and they enjoyed the Halloween candy and glow sticks our mystery reader shared with each of them afterward. The students are very excited our mystery reader program has begun and they cannot wait for the next mystery reader!
